Honor in the Dust (Winslow Breed #1) by Gilbert Morris

Title: Honor in the Dust (Winslow Breed #1)

Author: Gilbert Morris

Pages: 320

Year: 2009

Genre: Historical Fiction

Publisher: Howard Books

Format: eBook (also available in paperback)

About the book:

The grandfather of Christian fiction returns with the story of what happened to the Winslow family during an earlier era when the Tudors reigned; tracing the doomed rise of Stuart Winslow pithing the salacious court of King Henry VIII.

The determined Stuart Winslow will go to any lengths to lift himself and his widowed mother out of poverty. After a distant relative manages to secure a place for Stuart in the court of King Henry VIII, Stuart quickly learns that the court is really a wicked cauldron of vices, power plays, and temptation. As Stuart rises at court, he is asked to find and deliver for execution an enemy of the king; William Tyndale, an acquaintance of Stuart’s whose sole ambition is to translate the Bible into the language of the common man. Does Stuart fall prey his dangerous ambition and accept the assignment? Or is he willing to face death at the stake for the sake of Christ?

In Honor in the Dust, bestselling author Gilbert Morris captures the tone of the Tudor period beautifully, chronicling the period’s excesses with skill and prudence. But like Morris’s other novels, it also contrasts those excesses with the godly behavior of real-life characters like William Tyndale. In this captivating historical drama, Stuart Winslow is caught between two worlds: one that promises material and worldly success, and one that promises salvation. Is his faith strong enough to withstand such a challenge?

(This is the back cover copy that the publisher put out. Much of the second paragraph is different from the story in this book. An example is that Stuart’s mother is not a widow when he goes to court.)

My review:

This is a fascinating historical book!

I loved reading a book set during the time of King Henry VIII where the king was not the main character.

I was caught up in the story of Claiborne Winslow and his whole family. The characters are wonderful and I fell in love with them. Grace Winslow has to be one of my favorites though. She has an incredibly simple faith. Her attitude toward prayer is amazing. I would love to be able to say that mine is the same as her’s.

There is a remarkable emphasis on relationships with others in this book. They are not all positive though. In this aspect they are very realistic.

I was enthralled by the growth of many of the characters as the story progressed. Much of the positive growth came about through very negative circumstances. I definitely relate to that aspect of this book.

I am giving this wonderful story a rating of 5 stars and highly recommending it. I am really looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

About the book:

On the run from hired gunmen, can she find safety in Amish country?

After overhearing an illegal weapons deal, Sophie Larson knows two things: her uncle’s a dangerous criminal…and he wants her dead. Now undercover cop Aiden Forster has no choice but to blow his cover and protect Sophie by hiding her and her deaf sister in Amish country. But with a mole in the police force, danger isn’t far behind.

My review:

This is an amazing adrenaline rush romantic suspense novel!

I love all three of the main characters in this book. Aiden is a rock solid protector. Both Sophie and her younger sister Celine are strong and courageous even though they are filled with well placed fear. They have a number of secondary characters come along side them to help keep them safe.

I loved all of the details that the author gives about cochlear implants. I had heard the term but knew nothing about how they worked.

The plot of the story is fantastic. In the first few pages the reader is thrust into it. The danger then runs throughout the book with only brief moments to build the romantic connection while we all, reader and characters, catch our breath. Then near the end of the book there is a great surprise revelation.

I am giving this marvelous book a rating of 5 stars. I highly recommend it. Though it is part of a series it completely stands alone.

My review:

I was completely caught up in this wonderful historical romance.

I love both of the main characters in this story. They are both committed to doing the right thing. At times though Miss Julia Grey is a little uncertain as to where her loyalty should be placed. I enjoyed seeing how she worked out this question.

The plot of the story is great. I was very interested in seeing how Mr. Nicholas Langdon went about tracking down the evidence that the War Department asked him to get.

The narrator did an amazing job? She was marvelous at altering her voice. Many times I felt very much like there could have been a whole cast of people reading the parts. She was also great at making me feel what the characters were feeling.

The Christmas Box (The Christmas Box Trilogy #1) by Richard Paul Evans

Title: The Christmas Box (The Christmas Box Trilogy #1)
Author: Richard Paul Evans
Pages: 125
Year: 1996
Genre: Christmas Story
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Format: Hardback (also available in eBook)

About the book:

“Whatever the reason, I find that with each passing Christmas the story of the Christmas Box is told less and needed more. So I record it now for all future generations to accept or dismiss as seems them good. As for me, I believe. And it is, after all, my story.”

So begins “The Christmas Box,” the touching story of a widow and the young family who moves in with her. Together they discover the first gift of Christmas and learn what Christmas is really all about. “The Christmas Box” is a Christmas story unlike any other.

My review:

This is a wonderful, tender, Christmas story!

I love the simple way that this story is presented. It brings out what is the best of people and the connections that they can make with each other. It actually took me back to a time when people trusted each other just because most people could be trusted.

Mary is my favorite character in this story. She loves just because she knows God and His love. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing how she went about teaching Richard a very basic truth that we all need to know and keep in mind.

This book touched my heart very deeply and I have to give it a rating of 5 stars. I’m highly recommending it. I have never read a book by this author before. I can’t wait to read everything else he has written.

unless this K-9 sniffs him out first.

When a plane carrying dangerous convicts crashes in the Colorado Rockies, Deputy Sierra Young and her search-and-rescue K-9, Samson, race to help—and discover they’re after her! With one survivor vowing revenge, Sierra’s former coworker turned PI, Bryce Elliott, is determined to protect her. But can Bryce, Sierra and Samson track down the fugitive before he succeeds in taking their lives?

My review:

This is a wonderful romantic suspense novel!

I thoroughly enjoyed both of the main characters. It was great to see how they interacted with each other. They had a past relationship that left them uncertain how to proceed in the current situation.

The plot of the story is very intricate. The danger is palpable and kept me focused on the story. I was tied up emotionally with the safety of the characters, and that includes Samson, the search-and-rescue dog.

I was fascinated with the details about how Samson was trained and then commanded in different situations. I loved finding out that his official commands were given in German so that he wouldn’t be confused by regular conversations. I knew that some police dogs are commanded in German but I didn’t know the reason why.

I am giving this great book a rating of 5 stars. I highly recommend it.
